I want it to lead to a trilogy, because I want to do this again.
Yes, we have nothing better to do in the office today than to argue Fantasy & Sci-Fi.

We've been bickering all morning about this, so to settle it I need a third opinion...

You would've loved it here - when the doctors walked past, and overheard us, they joined in and it turned into a full-blown heated discussion, during which more and more people that passed by were encouraged to voice opinion.

I think of John Christopher's Tripods trilogy, mainly because it's alliterative and begins with tri-.

The Godfather. Even though the third one is pants, it's the default trilogy in my head.

I suspect Indiana Jones would be next to mind if asked, since I don't think of Star Wars as a trilogy at all. (And I have LOTR mentally pegged as one long film simply split into three for convenience.)

Yes, to Indiana. Like Star Wars fans with episodes I-III, I refuse to acknowledge the existance of Indiana 4 :)

The increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy... but that's a book. Not film... well only part of it's a film.

As for the two you listed... yeah.. they both suck.

I count star wars as a trilogy as the best films are "the three", though I really do see them as 6 films now (they got better...)

LOTR is 1 long story and about 12 books (contained into 3) so though it is a FAR better film, it is not a trilogy.

Matrix was good though, 3rd place. (it got worse...)

The first Matrix was fanastic, the second I can only remember the highway chase scene (which i don't think producers intended on making the redeeming feature), the third... erm... I know I saw it!

When I think "Trilogy" I think "one good movie, another decent movie, a third really horrible movie capitalizing on the money they'll get just from the name of the movie" - don't really think of a certain trilogy series.

Thinking of all the movies that come in 3's I have to admit that this indeed is a clear pattern. However, I thought of a few exceptions:

Indiana Jones - the 80s Indiana's are fanastic with Last Crusade being the last, but in my opinion best :)
The Godfather - Part II
Terminator 2 - hands down the best out of all the T's

I don't hate the new Star Wars movies. I find parts of them highly entertaining - the pod race, all the jedi fights (especially Yoda vs Dooku), and Obi Wan Kenobi(god, I love him). I think Lucas did a crap job in casting Anakin and he should have had someone else do some major rewrites. But for pure popcorn movie enjoyment, I like them.

Though I always leave the room during any Anakin/Padme love scene. Padme had such a strong, vital personality, but her backbone ran away when she started her illicit relationship.

i think you should define trilogy with special attention to the limits of what constitutes a trilogy. would you include beverly hills cop or spider-man? evil dead? or the bourne movies? -- there've been three of those, but we're likely to get more. a few good trilogies that come to mind...

* The Godfather
* Kieslowski's "Tri-color" films
* L'Avventura / La Notte / L'Eclisse
* The Decline of Western Civilization
* Late Spring / Early Summer / Tokyo Story
* Through a Glass Darkly / Winter Light / The Silence

and... what the fuck

* Witch Mountain!
